A few years ago I was taking a media relations class at my university. It was in the first few weeks of the Obama presidency, you know, the time before we as a nation became absolutely unhinged and it became acceptable to call people Nazis.
2009 seems so far away.
Anyway, one of the assignments was to be “interviewed” by our instructor on a topic of our choosing, something that was in the news that week. It was around this time that Rush Limbaugh was proudly proclaiming that he hoped President Obama would fail. It was a stupid comment then and it’s even more stupider-er three years later.
So my topic was that the Obama administration should ignore Rush Limbaugh. My teacher “interviewed” me in front of the class and he was amused by my answers, which was that Obama should ignore Rush’s rantings because he’s an irrelevant gasbag who doesn’t speak for the majority of Americans. His job is to be controversial and provocative; not to provide any sort of rational discourse to the American mainstream.
Three years later, I still think they should kind of, sort of ignore Limbaugh’s insanity. When Limbaugh says something outrageous that isn’t designed to be mean-spirited towards a private citizen, I think the proper action would be for President Obama to tweak him. Make fun of him.
But on this I absolutely agree with the president. Call attention to this bullshit and put an end to it now:
“All decent folks can agree that the remarks that were made don’t have any place in the public discourse,” Obama said. “We want to send a message to all our young people being part of the democracy involves argument and disagreements and debate. We want you to be engaged. And there’s a way to do it that doesn’t involve you being demeaned and insulted. Particularly when you’re a private citizen.”
Of course, the genie is now out of the bottle and conservatives have been falling all over themselves to call Sandra Fluke a variation of “slut” as they act out their id all over the media. But reasonable people will look at the president’s measured response and appreciate him sticking up for this girl. Mean-spirited dickholes who idolize Limbaugh will no doubt find something to fume about, but that’s the nature of the beast.
Well done, Mr. President.
