Apparently the attendees at CPAC this year are feeling glum about their party’s candidates. Now, why anyone would feel bummed about Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul puzzles me because that shit is straight A-team.
The Conservative Political Action Conference is one of the biggest and most anticipated events on the conservative calendar. Generally, the excitement in the air is palpable as conservatives gather to hear over and over again about how their ideas alone are the path to the nation’s salvation.
This year? Not so much.
The incredibly divisive Republican presidential primary has taken its toll on the mood at this year’s conference. Conversations with attendees tell the same story: none of the candidates has them all that stoked about the next 10 months.
I’m not sure why Santorum isn’t the answer for these people. He’s sufficiently bigoted and evangelical enough. Plus, he loves Big Business. Maybe it’s the creepy smile and the odd sweater vests.
It’s probably time for Republicans to do some soul searching: when a bunch of crazy-ass Republicans who are saying crazy-ass things and promising to enact crazy-ass ideas are not adequately crazy enough, it’s not them; it’s you.
It’s not them. It’s you.
