Halperin: “By picking an unnecessary fight over contraception with the Catholic Church, Obama risks losing some of the support he enjoyed in 2008, including from the Hispanic Catholics who voted for him in overwhelming numbers. And if the President scales back the current policy to try to make peace with Catholic voters, women’s rights advocates will see the reversal as a disappointment.”
Catholics, even Hispanic ones, use birth control. Hispanic Catholics are not likely to sit out for Obama because he’s requiring Catholic institutions to provide contraceptive coverage to employees. Honestly, Mark Halperin, what weird, stupid universe are you occupying to say that Hispanics, a favorite scapegoat for conservatives, are going to abandon Obama because of this?
It’s a shame that TIME can’t do any better than this.
